C programming language was designed and developed by Dennis Ritchie at Bell Research Labs (Murray Hill, New Jersey, USA) on DEC PDP-11 that used the UNIX operating system. C has its origins in the typeless programming language BCPL (Basic Combined Programming Language) developed by Martin Richards , and it influenced a language called B, which was invented by Ken Thompson. B led to development of C in the 1972. In 1978, Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie produced the first publicly available description of C, now known as the K&R standard.
With the increasing popularity of C and no existing standards led to discrepancies. To alter this situation, ANSI established a committee in the beginning of 1983 to create a standard for C which was first implemented in 1989 and is widely referred to as ANSI C or C89. This document was adopted in 1990 by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) as C90 andwas later expanded to the latest standard, which is often referred to as C99. The new standard for the C programming language. Is “C11”.
The C programming language is known to be one of the base language of all programming languages today. It is identified as the mother of all programming languages. It has nearly been five decades since C programming was invented and yet it is used in many applications today. The C language is a structural language and it is the language that is used to program many Windows and Linux programs and applications. Many other programming languages have their programming structure evolved from the C language just like the C++, Java and C# programming languages.
The C language is very robust and it can be used to implement many programs, software and applications. Any person who is interested in learning programming must first make sure that he has a strong basic background in C programming language. A person who masters the varied aspects of the C programming language can master any other programming language with relative ease.
